WATERLOO — Retired Dubuque Archbishop Jerome Hanus said Thursday he looks forward to giving a deposition soon in a 2011 lawsuit regarding his handling of an alleged clergy sex abuse incident 26 years ago by a monk at a Missouri abbey.

Hanus administered the abbey at time of the alleged abuse, and he plans to retire there.

The national Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests issued a press release Wednesday, two days after Hanus announced his resignation in Dubuque, regarding the pending deposition, critical of his handling of the matter.

Minneapolis attorney Jeff Anderson, representing the plaintiff in the Nodaway County, Mo. suit, confirmed Hanus is scheduled to be deposed this month in the pending case. In the suit, a plaintiff identified as “John Doe 181″ said he was sexually molested as a minor while at a choir camp in 1987 at Conception Abbey Inc., a Benedictine abbey, by a Father Bede Parry, who also is scheduled for deposition.

At the insistence of Hanus, Parry was “required to receive psychological treatment” as a condition of his completing seminary school, the suit says. He was sent to a facility in New Mexico for sex offender treatment and did not return to the abbey. He subsequently became a Episcopal priest and resigned from a parish in the state of Nevada after the 2011 Missouri suit was filed.

In response to an emailed request for comment, Hanus, not named as a defendant in the suit, issued the following statement:

“A lawsuit has been filed in Missouri that makes several claims about a former monk at Conception Abbey where I served as abbot from 1977 to 1987. I await the opportunity to be deposed. I look forward to it.”

The suit says Parry disclosed previous “inappropriate sexual relationships” while attending seminary in Minnesota “and had sexually abused numerous students before Fr. Parry sexually abused the plaintiff.”

SNAP director David Clohessy said, “The consequences from this deposition (of Hanus) could be huge…It’s important that the public find out what Hanus knew about not only Parry, but other child-molesting clerics.”

Under Hanus’ tenure, the Dubuque archdiocese paid out more than $12.3 million to 47 clergy sex abuse victims over the three settlements from 2006-08, plus counseling, in decades-old cases. Many of the offending priests are now deceased. None are practicing priests; some were removed from priestly duties by Hanus and at least one was defrocked by the Vatican. The archdiocese ordered mandatory sex abuse prevention training for its employees, and new reports dropped off drastically in subsequent years.

Hanus, 72, announced his resignation Monday, citing declining health, especially following a February 2012 auto accident in Wright County. Hanus actually tendered his resignation last year. His successor, former Wichita, Kan., Bishop Michael O. Jackels, introduced Monday as Hanus publicly announced his resignation, was recently appointed by new Pope Francis.

Hanus was bishop of St. Cloud, Minn., from 1987 to 1994, and succeed Daniel Kucera as Dubuque archbishop in 1995.

The Roman Catholic Archbishop of Dubuque, Iowa Jerome Hanus has announced he is resigning “for health reasons” just two weeks prior to his scheduled deposition of a former pedophile priest who was later accepted into the Episcopal Church. Hanus is the first archbishop to resign under Pope Francis. Archbishop Hanus will move back to Conception Abbey.

The new pope is said to be house cleaning following a worldwide scandal involving the actions of scores of epipedophile priests and allegations that there is a cabal of homosexual cardinals operating within the Vatican. Zero tolerance is the mantra of the new pope.

According to a videotaped interview with Bede Parry, Archbishop Hanus (then Abbot in Conception, MO) knew of Parry’s misconduct with youth BEFORE Parry abused several choir kids in Missouri. Parry admitted to misconduct in a signed May, 2011 statement. You can see a video of Bede regarding Hanus here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnQJfFbtifA

In a November 7, 2011, Parry admitted, “During the camp, I had inappropriate sexual contact in my living quarters with… a member of the Abbey Boy Choir. I have since recognized that I may have acted inappropriately with at least one other member of the Abbey Boy Choir.”

In 2000, Parry, then a non-functioning Roman Catholic priest, joined the staff of All Saints Episcopal Church as music director.

Episcopal Church records show that on Oct. 15, 2004, he converted and was received into The Episcopal Church.

In 2002, after noticing that All Saints could use more clergy, Parry offered to become an Episcopal priest there

At the time, Episcopal Bishop of Nevada, Katharine Jefferts Schori knew about Parry’s “proclivity to reoffend with minors”. Officials in the local Roman Catholic Diocese of Las Vegas had made this information available to her. As a part of the conversion process, Parry told Jefferts Schori of his sexual misbehavior as a Roman Catholic monk/priest and that he was dismissed from his Abbey because of it. He did not tell her of the five or six earlier offenses

In 2002-03 at some point in the reception process, Abbot Polan of Conception Abbey spoke to Bishop Jefferts Schori about Parry’s background. Poland says he told her of Parry’s repeated offenses, that he sent her the 2000 psychological results about Parry, and that they discussed his proclivity to reoffend.

Even with this information in hand — that this soon-to-be Episcopal priest, could very easily “reoffend with minors” — Jefferts Schori recognized his Roman Catholic ordination to the priesthood and gave him faculties (diocesan authority) to fully function as an Episcopal priest in the Episcopal Diocese of Nevada.

Parry eventually ended up as an assisting priest at All Saints Episcopal Church in Las Vegas. He left that position in June 2011 when the Kansas City Star ran a story about his sexually abusive past as a Roman Catholic monk/priest at Conception Benedictine Abby in northwest Missouri where he was the boys’ choir director. The story also revealed the fact that a law suit had been filed by a former Abby student outlining Parry’s abuse with him and other students along with the Abbey’s cover up of these abusive events.

All Saints has an attached All Saints’ Day School, which is a State of Nevada licensed Kindergarten and preschool. It also has an extended hours childcare that is caring for and teaching 60 children aged 2 through Kindergarten. Parry would, in all likelihood, have been involved with these young children, through the Day School’s music, dance and drama programs, as well as with any children or youth involved in music on the parish level. The current Bishop of Nevada, Dan Edwards claims that Parry had no contact with children or youth during the 10 years he was employed at All Saints.

However, there are lots of times when parish children get involved with special church music such as during Christmas and Easter and when the bishop comes to visit. Children also interact with the priest as acolytes, torchbearers, and gift bearers during the Service of Holy Communion. And many times the parish priests will visit the various Sunday School classes to help with catechesis or the teaching of the faith and with preparation for Confirmation. Episcopal priests, like their Roman Catholic counterparts, also hear confessions that are a private one-on-one encounter.

Online The Episcopal Church still lists Bede James McKinley Parry as being canonically resident in the Episcopal Diocese of Nevada and living at: 5733 Capitola Avenue in Las Vegas. “…information [is] not provided for clergy’s principal position(s) or parish(es).”

The Episcopal Church Publishing website still shows that Bede Parry was received from the Roman Catholic Church into The Episcopal Church by Katharine Jefferts Schori on Oct. 15, 2004.

The following 2011 story links Hanus to the Parry lawsuit: http://www.heartlandconnection.com/directory/legal/story.aspx?id=634081

The following is Archbishop Hanus’ resignation letter: http://wcfcourier.com/jerome-hanus-statement/pdf_8405194a-a043-11e2-9965-0019bb2963f4.html

Virtueonline’s original story can be found here: http://www.virtueonline.org/portal/modules/news/article.php?storyid=14550

“Allegations made that Presiding Bishop knew former Benedictine monk was a pedophile when he joined TEC”: http://www.virtueonline.org/portal/modules/news/article.php?storyid=14556

So the question is: why does an Archbishop resign in the wake of a sex scandal while Jefferts Schori takes a walk with no accountability? Will the Episcopal House of Bishops have the courage to act and take this matter up and apply the necessary disciplinary canons to force her out? We shall see.

Pope Francis has accepted the tendered resignation at age 73, two years younger than the age required for resignation by bishops, of Archbishop Jerome Hanus of Dubuque, Iowa.

Archbishop Hanus says his resignation is for “health reasons”.

In two weeks, Archbishop Hanus was scheduled to be deposed in a case of a former priest, Bede Parry. This priest has said in an interview that he told Archbishop Hanus about what he had done. Subsequent to the Archbishop having this information, Parry abused other children. Parry admitted to his conduct in 2011.

So, Hanus hands in a resignation, it’s accepted in the shadow of a court date.

Finn is criminally convicted. He is still a bishop with jurisdiction.

Archbishop resigns before deposition

He’s supposed to be questioned in 2 weeks

And he’s returning soon to Kansas City diocese

That’s where he allegedly hid child sex crimes

The perpetrator, a Catholic cleric, has admitted guilt

An Iowa Catholic archbishop has announced his resignation “for health reasons” just two weeks prior to his scheduled deposition in a clergy sex abuse and cover up case.

He’s Jerome Hanus who has headed the Archdiocese of Dubuque, IA and will soon live again in the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph.

From 1977 to 1987, Jerome Hanus was abbot at Conception Abbey in Conception, MO (Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph). In a videotaped interview and a signed confession from 2011, Bede Parry admitted that Abbot Jerome Hanus knew about Parry’s previous sexual misconduct yet still placed Parry in a position of authority with the Conception Abbey Boy Choir where Parry reoffended with at least five choir participants.

With this resignation, Hanus has become to first high-ranking church official to step down during Pope Francis’ new regime.

http://www.bishop-accountability.org/news2011/05_06/2011_06_24_Thomas_FormerLeader.htm

“It’s extremely rare for a standing Archbishop to be desposed, and even moreso when that official has been named as an enabler by a predator priest himself,” said said David Clohessy, SNAP Director. “The consequences from this deposition could be huge.”

SNAP believes that it is important the deposition still be held and that Hanus is made to ask tough questions about his time in Missouri and Iowa

“We hope the deposition will still be held,” said David Clohessy, SNAP Director. “It’s important that the public find out what Hanus knew about not only Parry, but other child-molesting clerics.”

Clohessy continued to say that “if he’s covered up sex crimes once, he’s surely done it again.”

Two attorneys – Rebecca Randles of Kansas City and Jeff Anderson of St. Paul MN – have handled cases against Parry.

Here’s video of Parry, the accused predator, regarding Hanus:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnQJfFbtifA

Here’s a statement Parry made in May 2011:

http://www.deceptioninconception.com/statement-of-rev-bede-parry/

Here’s a new article about Hanus’ resignation:

Parry lives in Las Vegas, Nevada. Hanus plans to move back to Conception Abbey in northwestern Missouri.

As many of you know, my health has declined in recent years. As a result, some time ago I submitted my resignation as Archbishop to the proper authorities.

In a recent telephone conversation, the Pope’s representative in the United States, Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, informed me that our Holy Father, Pope Francis, had accepted my resignation and appointed as the next Archbishop of Dubuque, the Most Rev. Michael O. Jackels, currently Bishop of Wichita, Kansas. My immediate response to the selection of him as my successor was: “I am thrilled.”

For eight years, Archbishop Jackels has served faithfully and effectively as the Bishop of Wichita. His experience will serve him well here in Northeast Iowa. Wichita and Dubuque are similar in many ways. I think initially of the commitment to Catholic schools and all forms of Catholic education. The Diocese of Wichita is known as the premier diocese in its practice of stewardship: the entire membership supports parents in their choice of Catholic education.

Support of Church vocations and especially encouragement of seminarians have characterized his ministry as bishop. I am sure that Archbishop Jackels will be a great leader in this regard.

Both of our dioceses are undergoing massive changes in agriculture, population, diversity, and economics. Our new Archbishop is no stranger to these challenges which characterize the Midwest. He will bring new energy and insights as we move toward the future.

I am so grateful to Pope Francis for accepting my resignation and for appointing Archbishop Jackels. I had explained my situation in a letter to Pope Benedict XVI last year. In the months since then, my health has deteriorated further. With the resignation and the election of the Popes, I had feared that a decision might be significantly delayed. So I am grateful to the Holy Father and to those who advise him. They know that the Archdiocese of Dubuque needs an Archbishop who can devote full energy and attention in providing pastoral leadership. Praise God, we shall have that.

Thank you, Archbishop Michael O. Jackels, for accepting this appointment. I assure you that you will receive a warm welcome from the clergy, religious, and laity of the Archdiocese of Dubuque.

DUBUQUE, Iowa — Only hours after a formal announcement from the Vatican, Dubuque Archbishop Jerome Hanus helped introduce his successor to the public.

The former bishop of Wichita, Kan., Michael Jackels, was appointed by Pope Francis as the 12th head of the Dubuque Catholic Archdiocese, which includes 30 counties in northeast Iowa.

Hanus tendered his resignation last year, citing declining health especially since a traffic accident a year ago. Jackels’ appointment is one of the first batch of assignments the new pope has made.

Both men and former Archbishop Daniel Kucera, who was in attendance in his wheelchair, were applauded by staff.

“They love you already,” Kucera quipped, as an enthusiastic audience in the archdiocesan pastoral center clapped loudly.

Jackels said he is “ready to follow God’s will” in his new role as archbishop in Dubuque. Jackels will be installed as archbishop on May 30. Archbishop Jerome Hanus will serve as apostolic administrator until the installation. More details about the installation, an elaborate ceremony in the Catholic Church, will be forthcoming, officials noted at the press conference.

Hanus said he will resume life as a monk in Missouri after he leaves Dubuque.

Jackels comes from an environment of thriving Catholic schools in Wichita, Kan. The Catholic school system there survives not on tuition but community stewardship. While Catholic school enrollment is declining in other parts of the country, Wichita has opened new Catholic schools.

A confession. I don’t like American football very much, and I’m not enormously fond of Episcopalian theology either. But most of all, I hate hypocrisy and Catholic-bashing. So let’s take a trip to Pennsylvania, via Kansas. Bede Parry is a former Benedictine monk who has a history of abusing young men. When this was discovered he was ejected from his abbey and then refused by another monastery in Las Vegas. Rejected by the Roman Catholic Church, in 2004 he became an Episcopalian priest, even after informing the then bishop of Nevada, Katharine Jefferts Schori, that he had sexually transgressed just a few years earlier. She was also told by his former monastery about his sordid past and given highly damaging psychological records. Surprise, surprise. In July this year he resigned from his post and is currently facing criminal charges.

But here is where it all becomes somewhat Kafkaesque. Rather than campaigning against Jefferts Schori and demanding to know why she accepted into ordination a man with such a grotesque record — reports that suggested he was likely to reoffend — the usual anti-Catholic brigade have set up shop locally to attack the Catholic bishop and the Catholic Church.

Ms. Jefferts Schori, of course, is now the presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church of the United States, or in other words the head of the American version of the Anglican communion. She is also a roaring liberal, a darling of the left, the gay community and those who believe Catholicism to be reactionary, ultra-orthodox and on the wrong side of history.

Those of us who have had to study the ugly figures for sexual abuse knew some time ago that the rates within the Church of England and its international branches were generally higher than within Catholicism, though not as high as those documented in, for example, public education. No matter, if it’s abuse it has to be Catholic abuse, and why allow truth to get in the way of a good story.

A good story; which is precisely what I heard when I listened to Coach Joe Paterno speak a few years ago now, down at Penn State. I was there delivering a set of lectures on G.K. Chesterton and Edwardian English literature of all things, and “Coach,” as he was known, came to listen. It was as if the icon has suddenly come to life. Awe and invincible respect all round. He seemed a nice man, and it’s his assistant, Jerry Sandusky, not him who has been charged with hideous crimes of molesting young boys. Joe, we’re told, knew about some of them and did far too little to intervene.

Which has led most people to assume that pretty much every football coach is part of some enormous sexual underworld, covering up or committing rape and any number of sexual assaults. But of course not. We’re sane, sensible people and we would never make such banal generalizations. That sort of rubbish is reserved for Roman Catholic priests.

In a statement (below) dated November 16, 2011, Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori, proves herself to be a talented wordsmith and an insensitive, deceptive leader. This statement raises more questions and several new concerns.

Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori has issued the following statement concerning Bede Parry.

Bede James Parry was serving as organist and music director at All Saints Church, Las Vegas, when I became aware of him. His arrival preceded my own in the Diocese of Nevada.

He approached me to inquire about being received as a priest, having served as a priest in the Roman Catholic Church. At the time, he told me of being dismissed from the monastery in 1987 for a sexual encounter with an older teenager, and indicated that it was a single incident of very poor judgment. The incident was reported to civil authorities, who did not charge him. He told of being sent to a facility in New Mexico, serving as a priest thereafter both in New Mexico and in Nevada, and recently (2002) being asked to formalize his separation from the monastery.

In consultation with other diocesan leadership and the chancellor, we explored the possibilities and liabilities of receiving him. I wrote to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Las Vegas and the Diocese of Santa Fe, receiving brief responses from each bishop, who indicated no problematic behavior. I wrote to Conception Abbey, from whom I received only an acknowledgement that he had served there, been sent for treatment to a facility in New Mexico, and had been dismissed for this incident of misconduct. Neither then nor later did I receive a copy of any report of a psychological examination in connection with his service in the Roman Catholic Church. His departure from the Roman Catholic priesthood had to do with his desire to take up secular employment.

Parry was required to fulfill all the expectations of the canons regarding reception of a priest from another communion in historic succession. He did undergo a psychological exam in the Diocese of Nevada, was forthcoming about the incident he had reported to me, and did not receive a negative evaluation. His background check showed no more than what he had already told us. He was forthcoming about the previous incident in his interviews with the Commission on Ministry and with the Standing Committee.

I made the decision to receive him, believing that he demonstrated repentance and amendment of life and that his current state did not represent a bar to his reception. I was clear that his ministry would be limited to an assisting role, under the supervision of another priest, and like any other diocesan leader, he would not be permitted to work alone with children. Since that time, as far as I am aware, he has served faithfully and effectively as a minister of the gospel and priest of this Church.

The records of his reception are retained by the Diocese of Nevada, and further questions should be directed to Bishop Dan Edwards.

Statement of Bede Parry
May 7, 2011
All-Saints Episcopal Church – Las Vegas, Nevada

My name is Bede Parry and I currently reside in Las Vegas, Nevada. In November of 2010, I was contacted by and subsequently met on two occasions with Patrick Marker regarding my knowledge of misconduct by personnel at Saint John’s Abbey in Collegeville, Minnesota.

In my meetings with Mr. Marker in November of 2010, and in several telephone and email conversations since, we have discussed issues related to my background, inappropriate contact by members of the clergy (at Saint John’s and elsewhere, including my own), and a mutual desire to create a safe environment for children and vulnerable adults.

I have agreed to provide details of my background, as follows:

In 1973, I joined Conception Abbey, a Benedictine monastic community located in Missouri. Between 1974 and 1979, I was involved in three relationships that included sexual contact, and were thus inappropriate for a monastic. In 1979, I admitted my misconduct to Abbot Jerome Hanus of Conception Abbey. Later in 1979, I enrolled in the three-year School of Theology program at Saint John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota.

In 1981, a student at Saint John’s University made allegations of sexual misconduct against me. I was asked to attend a meeting with [St. John's Victim #1], the student with whom I had indeed engaged in inappropriate sexual contact, Fr. Roman Paur and perhaps one other member of the Saint John’s community. During the meeting, I apologized for my inappropriate conduct and agreed to have no further contact with [St. John's Victim #1].

Immediately after the meeting with Roman Paur, I phoned Abbot Jerome Hanus at Conception Abbey and made him aware of my misconduct. After a discussion about the misconduct, Abbot Jerome simply said, “Don’t do it again.”

[Video: Additional Comments Regarding Abbot Hanus... Here ]

A few days after the meeting with Roman Paur, I met for tea with Saint John’s Abbot Jerome Theisen. Abbot Theisen said that he had spoken to Abbot Hanus about my conduct. There was an understanding, by all parties, that I would not do it again. I also agreed to get some counseling. I counseled with Fr. Finian McDonald for several weeks then met with a counselor in St. Cloud, Minnesota for additional therapy.

While attending the School of Theology, I lived with the other monks at Saint John’s. There was an awareness of my misconduct among the other monks. In addition to Fr. Roman Paur and Fr. Finian McDonald, Fr. Rene McGraw also knew details of my misconduct. I recall that other monks commented or joked about my misconduct in a light-hearted, but nonetheless inappropriate, manner.

I completed the School of Theology program in 1982 and returned to Conception Abbey that summer. I was ordained on April 16, 1983. Abbot Jerome Hanus reminded me at the time of my ordination that I would need to be “especially observant” of my vow of celibacy.

In the summer of 1987, Conception Abbey hosted a choir camp. I had been involved with the Abbey Boy Choir as organist, director, or both, for several years. During the camp, I had inappropriate sexual contact in my living quarters with [John Doe 181], a member of the Abbey Boy Choir.

My misconduct with [John Doe 181] was reported to the leadership at Conception Abbey the same day. At a meeting with [John Doe 181’s parents] and the Abbot, I admitted to the misconduct and apologized for my behavior.

Soon after the incident with [John Doe 181], I left Conception Abbey for Jemez Springs, New Mexico. Abbot Jerome Hanus drove me to the airport. I took part in a three-month program at the Servants of the Paraclete facilities.

I have since recognized that I may have acted inappropriately with at least one other member of the Abbey Boy Choir.

Late in 1987, I finished the Paraclete program and accepted a job, as choirmaster and organist, at St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Albuquerque. I continued to receive therapy from a female counselor, Margaret, in Santa Fe.

I am aware that in 1990, someone from Conception Abbey asked [John Doe 181’s parents] about my potential return to the area. I am unaware of the details of the conversation but was told by Abbot James Jones that it would “not be wise” for me to return to Conception Abbey.

In 1995, Fr. Anthony Gorman from Saint John’s Abbey sent [St. John's Victim #1's] obituary to me. I do not know how Fr. Gorman knew to contact me, or the nature of Fr. Gorman’s relationship with [St. John's Victim #1].

In 2000, I was recruited by Mary Bredlau to work at All-Saints Episcopal Church in Las Vegas.

Also in 2000, I considered joining the Prince of Peace monastery in Riverside, California. Prince of Peace had me undergo a series of psychological tests. After the testing, Prince of Peace’s Abbot Charles Wright informed me I was no longer a candidate. The psychological evaluation had determined that I had a proclivity to reoffend with minors. Abbot Wright called Conception Abbey’s Abbot Gregory Polan with this information.

Abbot Polan would later share the information with Robert Stoeckig from the Catholic Diocese of Las Vegas, Episcopal Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori and the human resources department at Mercy Ambulance in Las Vegas. Bishop Daniel Walsh, Monsignor Ben Franzinelli, Bishop Joseph Pepe, Archbishop Robert Sanchez and Rev. Bob Nelson were also made aware of my previous misconduct.

In 2002, I pursued a cooperative dismissal from the Catholic Church. Fr. Dan Ward, a canon lawyer from Saint John’s Abbey in Collegeville, Minnesota, prepared the documents.

I have only recently begun to understand how my misconduct has affected my victims.

Everything that I have done in my life has been with me, and haunting me, every day. I dream about it. I think about it. Not a day passes when I do not regret my conduct. I am truly sorry.
